Nippletop
#13About Nippletop
Nippletop stands at 4,620 feet (1,408 m) and is the thirteenth highest peak in New York. Located in the Dix Mountain Wilderness, the mountain features a large, rounded summit with a small rocky area offering exceptional views. The peak provides panoramic vistas of the Great Range, the Dix Range, and the Colvin Range. Despite its somewhat humorous name, Nippletop is a serious mountain with challenging approaches from either Elk Lake or the Ausable Club. The most common route is via the Elk Pass Trail, often combined with Dial Mountain as part of a loop hike.
History
Nippletop received its distinctive name from its appearance when viewed from certain angles, particularly from the south, where it resembles a breast with a nipple. The mountain was first climbed and surveyed in the mid-19th century. The lands surrounding Nippletop were part of private hunting preserves before eventually being incorporated into the Forest Preserve. The summit was once more open, but succession has led to more tree growth, though excellent views remain from designated viewing areas. Parts of the mountain's forests were affected by a significant fire in the early 20th century, evidence of which can still be seen in some areas.
