Big Slide Mountain stands at 4,240 feet (1,292 m) and is the twenty-seventh highest peak in New York. Located on the northeastern edge of the Great Range, Big Slide is named for the prominent slide on its western face, visible from many vantage points in the region. The mountain is known for its exceptional views of the Great Range, particularly from the series of open rock summits known as 'The Brothers' that hikers cross on the most popular route to the peak. Big Slide is often recommended for beginning High Peaks hikers due to its moderate difficulty, excellent vistas throughout the hike, and location near the popular Garden trailhead in Keene Valley.
Big Slide Mountain received its name from the large, open slide on its western face, which was likely caused by a landslide in the 19th century. The mountain became a popular hiking destination in the early 20th century due to its proximity to Keene Valley and the excellent views it offers of the Great Range. The loop trail over The Brothers and returning via Johns Brook Lodge is considered one of the classic day hikes in the Adirondacks. Big Slide's position on the edge of the Great Range provides it with some of the best views of the entire range, making it a favorite photographic vantage point. The current trail was established in the early 20th century and has been maintained by the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Department of Environmental Conservation.
