White Butte
#30About White Butte
White Butte is North Dakota's highest point at 3,506 feet, located in the southwestern badlands region. The summit requires a moderate hike across grassland and offers views of the surrounding badlands and prairie. The area showcases the unique geology and ecosystems of the northern Great Plains.
History
Named for its light-colored Arikaree sandstone cap, White Butte represents the eroded remnants of a once-extensive sedimentary formation. The area is located on private ranch land, with the landowners graciously allowing hikers access to reach the state's highest point.
