Taum Sauk Mountain is Missouri's highest point at 1,772 feet, located in the Saint Francois Mountains. The summit can be reached by car and a short walk to a marker in the forest. The area is part of Taum Sauk Mountain State Park and offers hiking trails through the ancient igneous mountains of southeastern Missouri.
History
Named after a Piankeshaw Indian chief, Taum Sauk Mountain sits in some of Missouri's oldest geological formations. The Saint Francois Mountains are among the oldest exposed rocks in North America, representing ancient volcanic activity from over a billion years ago.
