Sassafras Mountain is South Carolina's highest point at 3,560 feet, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the North Carolina border. The summit features an observation deck and can be reached by car followed by a short walk. The area offers scenic views and is part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area.
History
Named for the sassafras trees in the area, this mountain was recognized as South Carolina's highest point after careful surveying determined it was higher than the previously recognized Pinnacle Mountain. The summit area has been developed with facilities to accommodate visitors.
