Mount Rogers
#19About Mount Rogers
Mount Rogers is Virginia's highest point at 5,729 feet, located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The heavily forested summit offers no views, but the nearby Wilburn Ridge and Grayson Highlands provide spectacular open meadows with wild ponies. The area features unique high-elevation ecosystems rare in Virginia.
History
Named after William Barton Rogers, the first State Geologist of Virginia and founder of MIT, Mount Rogers sits in one of Virginia's most biodiverse areas. The summit area features rare spruce-fir forests more typical of Canadian climates, preserved by the high elevation and cool temperatures.
