Mount Rainier
#4About Mount Rainier
Mount Rainier is an active stratovolcano and Washington's highest peak at 14,411 feet. Located in Mount Rainier National Park, this glaciated peak is one of the most heavily glaciated peaks in the contiguous United States. It's a popular but challenging mountaineering objective requiring technical climbing skills and glacier travel experience.
History
Named after British Admiral Peter Rainier by Captain George Vancouver in 1792, Mount Rainier has been climbed since 1870 when Hazard Stevens and Philemon Van Trump made the first recorded ascent. The mountain is considered one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes due to its large amount of glacial ice and proximity to populated areas.
