Mount Mitchell is North Carolina's highest point at 6,684 feet and the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Located in Mount Mitchell State Park, the summit can be reached by car and a short walk to an observation deck. The mountain is known for its Fraser fir forests and often experiences cool temperatures year-round.
History
Named after Elisha Mitchell, a professor who fell to his death in 1857 while attempting to verify the mountain's height, Mount Mitchell was the first peak in the eastern United States to be measured over 6,000 feet. The mountain became North Carolina's first state park in 1915.
