History
Named after former New York Governor William L. Marcy in 1837, Mount Marcy was first climbed on August 5, 1837, by a party led by Ebenezer Emmons as part of the geological survey of New York. The mountain gained historical significance in 1901 when Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was hiking on Mount Marcy when he learned that President McKinley was dying; he rushed down the mountain to Buffalo where he was sworn in as president.
