Mount Katahdin is Maine's highest point at 5,267 feet and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Located in Baxter State Park, this granite monolith offers challenging hiking with multiple routes to the summit. The Knife Edge trail is particularly famous for its exposed ridge walking.
History
Called 'Katahdin' by the Penobscot Indians meaning 'The Great Mountain,' this peak has been climbed since 1804. The mountain was made famous by Henry David Thoreau's writings and serves as the final destination for thousands of Appalachian Trail thru-hikers each year.
