Mauna Kea
#6About Mauna Kea
Mauna Kea is Hawaii's highest peak at 13,803 feet and one of the few places in the tropics where snow can be found. This dormant volcano is home to world-renowned astronomical observatories and offers unique high-altitude tropical alpine conditions. While you can drive to the summit, the high altitude and rapid elevation change can be challenging.
History
Mauna Kea means 'White Mountain' in Hawaiian, named for the snow that caps its summit during winter months. The mountain is considered sacred by Native Hawaiians and has been used for astronomical observations since ancient times. Modern observatories were first built here in the 1960s.
