Clingmans Dome
#17About Clingmans Dome
Clingmans Dome is Tennessee's highest point at 6,643 feet and the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The summit features a distinctive observation tower providing 360-degree views of the Smokies. The half-mile paved trail to the summit makes it accessible to most visitors, though the elevation gain is significant.
History
Named after Thomas Lanier Clingman, a politician and explorer who measured many peaks in the region, Clingmans Dome is also the highest point along the entire 2,100+ mile Appalachian Trail. The observation tower was built in the 1950s and has become an iconic feature of the Great Smoky Mountains.
