Charles Mound is Illinois's highest natural point at 1,235 feet, located in Jo Daviess County near the Wisconsin border. The high point is on private property and requires permission to access. The area is part of the Driftless Area that escaped glaciation and features more varied topography than most of Illinois.
History
Named after an early settler, Charles Mound sits in the unglaciated Driftless Area of northwestern Illinois. This region features more rugged topography than the glaciated plains that characterize most of the state, providing habitat for species not found elsewhere in Illinois.
