Black Mesa is Oklahoma's highest point at 4,973 feet, located in the far northwestern panhandle. This mesa offers a moderate hike across shortgrass prairie to reach the summit marker. The area provides excellent views of the surrounding High Plains and represents a unique ecosystem in Oklahoma.
History
Named for its dark-colored cap rock, Black Mesa extends into Colorado and New Mexico. The Oklahoma portion is managed as Black Mesa State Park, and the area is known for its dinosaur tracks, unique geology, and diverse wildlife including bison herds.
