Black Elk Peak, formerly known as Harney Peak, is South Dakota's highest point at 7,244 feet. Located in the Black Hills, this granite spire offers panoramic views of the surrounding Black Hills and Great Plains. The hike to the summit is moderate and features a historic fire tower at the top.
History
Renamed in 2016 to honor Black Elk, a famous Lakota medicine man, the peak was previously named after General William Harney. The mountain is sacred to the Lakota people and offers some of the best views in the Black Hills region, with visibility extending for over 100 miles on clear days.
