Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet and is famous for its extreme weather conditions. The mountain holds the world record for highest wind speed ever observed by man at 231 mph, recorded in 1934. History
Mount Washington has a rich history dating back centuries. The mountain was known to native peoples as 'Agiocochook,' meaning 'Home of the Great Spirit.' First climbed by European settlers in 1642, it became a major tourist destination in the 19th century. The Mount Washington Cog Railway, built in 1869, was the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway and still operates today. The auto road, completed in 1861, provides another popular route to the summit.
