Owl's Head
#43About Owl's Head
Owl's Head reaches 4,025 feet and is considered one of the most remote and challenging 4,000-footers to reach. The mountain's wooded summit offers very limited views, but the journey through the remote Pemigewasset Wilderness provides a true backcountry experience. The peak is typically accessed via a long approach followed by a steep unmaintained path.
History
Owl's Head gained notoriety among peak baggers as one of the most difficult summits to reach due to its remote location and lack of official summit trail. The peak was added to the 4,000-footer list in the mid-20th century. The infamous 'Owl's Head Path' is maintained by use rather than official trail maintenance, adding to the mountain's challenging character.
