Mount Moosilauke
#10About Mount Moosilauke
Mount Moosilauke rises to 4,802 feet and is the westernmost 4,000-footer in New Hampshire. The broad, treeless summit offers spectacular 360-degree views and is known for its extensive alpine zone. The mountain is often the first or last peak hiked on the Appalachian Trail through New Hampshire. Several trails lead to the summit, with the Beaver Brook Trail being particularly scenic but challenging.
History
The name 'Moosilauke' comes from the Abenaki language, possibly meaning 'bald place' or 'moose-hillock.' The mountain has been a hiking destination since the mid-1800s. Dartmouth College has maintained a presence on the mountain since 1920, operating the Ravine Lodge and maintaining trails. The summit once hosted the Prospect House, a grand hotel that operated from 1860 to 1942.
