Mount Madison
#5About Mount Madison
Mount Madison is the northernmost and fifth highest of the Presidential Range at 5,367 feet. The summit offers spectacular views of the northern Presidentials and the Great Gulf. The mountain is known for its steep trails, particularly the challenging ascent via the Daniel Webster Trail. Madison Spring Hut, located just below the summit, has been serving hikers since 1888.
History
Named after President James Madison, the peak was first climbed in the early 1820s. The Madison Spring Hut, rebuilt several times since its original construction, is one of the oldest AMC huts and a testament to the mountain's long hiking tradition. The mountain is often included in the Presidential Traverse, one of the most challenging day hikes in the eastern United States.
