Mount Lafayette
#6About Mount Lafayette
Mount Lafayette is the highest peak in the Franconia Range at 5,260 feet and offers one of the most spectacular alpine experiences in the White Mountains. The summit provides breathtaking 360-degree views, including the dramatic Franconia Ridge to the south. The Franconia Ridge Trail, which traverses the summit, is considered one of the finest ridge walks in the eastern United States.
History
Originally called Great Haystack Mountain, it was renamed in 1825 after the Marquis de Lafayette, the French general who fought in the American Revolution. The mountain became especially popular after the Old Man of the Mountain, visible from its slopes, became a New Hampshire icon. Greenleaf Hut, established in 1929, provides overnight accommodations near the summit.
