Mount Jefferson
#3About Mount Jefferson
Mount Jefferson is the third highest peak in the White Mountains at 5,712 feet. The mountain features dramatic cliffs and deep ravines, particularly on its north and east sides. The summit offers commanding views of the Great Gulf Wilderness and neighboring Presidential peaks. The mountain's alpine zone supports rare arctic-alpine plant communities.
History
Named after President Thomas Jefferson in 1820, the mountain has been a destination for hikers and naturalists for over two centuries. The Appalachian Mountain Club's Jefferson Ravine Trail, established in the early 1900s, provides access through spectacular alpine terrain. The mountain's severe weather conditions make it one of the more challenging Presidential peaks to summit.
