Mount Garfield reaches 4,500 feet and offers one of the finest summit views in the White Mountains. The open summit provides spectacular panoramas of the Franconia Range, Twin Range, and Pemigewasset Wilderness. The mountain is accessible via the Garfield Trail, which passes by Garfield Ridge Shelter and several scenic viewpoints.
History
Named after President James A. Garfield shortly after his assassination in 1881, the mountain has been a popular hiking destination for over a century. Garfield Ridge Shelter, built in 1940, provides camping near the summit. The mountain is part of the Garfield Ridge Trail system that connects the Franconia and Twin ranges.
