Cannon Mountain stands at 4,100 feet and is famous for the Old Man of the Mountain, New Hampshire's iconic rock formation that collapsed in 2003. The summit offers spectacular views and is accessible via aerial tramway or hiking trails. The mountain features a popular ski area on its eastern slopes and is home to an observation tower at the summit.
History
Named for a nearby rock formation resembling a cannon, the mountain became famous for hosting the Profile (Old Man of the Mountain), which was New Hampshire's state emblem until its collapse in 2003. The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, New Hampshire's first, opened in 1938 and was rebuilt in 1980. The summit has been a tourist destination since the 19th century.
