#2About Leatherman Peak
Leatherman Peak stands as Idaho's second highest summit at 12,228 feet. Located in the Lost River Range, this imposing peak requires technical mountaineering skills and is considered one of the most challenging climbs among the Idaho 12ers. The peak offers stunning views of the surrounding wilderness and requires careful route finding across loose rock and steep terrain. Access typically involves a long approach hike through remote wilderness areas.
History
Named after early miners who worked the area wearing leather clothing, Leatherman Peak has a rich mining history. The surrounding area was heavily prospected in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, it stands as one of the premier mountaineering objectives in Idaho, attracting climbers who are working on completing all nine of the state's 12,000-foot peaks.
