Mount Borah
#1About Mount Borah
Mount Borah, also known as Borah Peak, is the highest peak in Idaho at 12,662 feet. Located in the Lost River Range within the Challis National Forest, it offers spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding wilderness. The standard route involves a challenging class 3 scramble with significant exposure, making it one of the most demanding state high points in the country. The peak is named after Senator William Edgar Borah, who served Idaho in the U.S. Senate for 33 years.
History
Mount Borah was first climbed in 1912 by Tom Lopez, though indigenous peoples had likely been in the area for centuries. The peak gained national attention in 1983 when a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck nearby, creating the Borah Peak earthquake scarp. The mountain is part of the Idaho 12ers challenge, attracting serious mountaineers from across the region who seek to climb all nine of Idaho's peaks over 12,000 feet.
