#6About Uncompahgre Peak
Uncompahgre Peak stands at 14,318 feet (4,364 m) as the highest summit of the San Juan Mountains. The name comes from the Ute word meaning 'red water spring.' The peak features a distinctive pyramid shape and offers a relatively straightforward standard route, making it one of the more accessible San Juan 14ers. The summit provides spectacular views across the rugged San Juan range.
History
The peak was named by the Hayden Survey in the 1870s using the Ute name for the area. The Ute people used the surrounding valleys for summer hunting grounds. The peak remains one of the most prominent landmarks in southwestern Colorado.
