#17About Mount Shavano
Mount Shavano rises to 14,230 feet (4,337 m) and is famous for the 'Angel of Shavano,' a snowfield that takes the shape of an angel in late spring. The peak offers moderate routes and is often combined with nearby Tabeguache Peak. The summit provides views across the Arkansas Valley and the Collegiate Peaks.
History
Named after Ute Chief Shavano, who was known for peaceful relations with settlers, the mountain features prominently in local Ute legend. The Angel of Shavano snowfield has become an iconic symbol, with legends telling of an Indian princess who cried tears that became the snowmelt.
