Pikes Peak
#30About Pikes Peak
Pikes Peak rises to 14,109 feet (4,301 m) as America's Mountain and one of Colorado's most famous peaks. The summit is accessible by car via the Pikes Peak Highway, by cog railway, or via several hiking trails including the famous Barr Trail. The view from the summit inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write 'America the Beautiful.' On clear days, climbers can see Denver, 70 miles north, and the Great Plains stretching endlessly eastward.
History
Named after explorer Zebulon Pike who attempted to climb it in 1806, Pikes Peak has been a landmark for travelers for centuries. The summit has hosted everything from car races to donut shops. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, 'Race to the Clouds,' has run annually since 1916.
