Mount Massive
#2About Mount Massive
Mount Massive lives up to its name as the second highest summit in the contiguous United States at 14,427 feet (4,398 m). The peak features a broad massif with five summits above 14,000 feet, earning its designation as the most massive 14er. Located just 5 miles north of Mount Elbert, it offers stunning views of the surrounding Sawatch Range. Popular routes include the East Slopes Trail and the Southwest Slopes route.
History
Mount Massive was measured by the Wheeler Survey in the 1870s and nearly caused controversy when some supporters tried to build a cairn to make it taller than Mount Elbert. The peak's five 14,000-foot summits span over three miles, making it truly massive in extent as well as elevation.
