La Plata Peak
#5About La Plata Peak
La Plata Peak towers at 14,344 feet (4,372 m) in the Sawatch Range near the ghost town of Winfield. The peak's name comes from silver mining in the area (La Plata means 'silver' in Spanish). Multiple routes exist, with the Northwest Ridge being the most popular. The summit offers outstanding views of the Elk Mountains and the Collegiate Peaks.
History
The peak was named by early Spanish explorers for the silver deposits in the region. Mining activity flourished in the late 1800s, with the nearby town of Winfield serving as a supply center. Today, the area is a popular destination for hikers combining peak bagging with historical exploration.
