Mount Elbert
#1About Mount Elbert
Mount Elbert is the highest summit of the Rocky Mountains and the highest point in Colorado at 14,438 feet (4,401 m). Named after Samuel Hitt Elbert, a Colorado statesman, this massive peak offers relatively non-technical routes making it one of the most popular 14ers. On clear days, climbers are rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views extending across much of Colorado. The peak sits within the Mount Massive Wilderness near Leadville, and its summit represents the highest point in the entire Mississippi River drainage basin.
History
Mount Elbert was first surveyed by members of the Hayden Survey in 1874 and is named after Samuel Hitt Elbert, who served as a territorial governor of Colorado. The peak's easy access and non-technical routes have made it one of the most climbed 14ers in Colorado, with thousands attempting the summit each year. Despite its height, it remained unnamed until the 1870s geological surveys.
