#1About Slide Mountain
Slide Mountain is the highest peak in the Catskills at 4,180 feet (1,274 m). It offers spectacular views from its summit and is known for its distinctive slide scars on its eastern face. The mountain is home to a unique boreal ecosystem and is part of the Slide Mountain Wilderness Area.
History
Slide Mountain was named for the large slide on its eastern face, which was created by a massive landslide in the 19th century. The mountain was first climbed by John Burroughs in 1879, who later wrote about his experiences in his essay 'The Heart of the Southern Catskills.' The mountain's summit was once home to a fire tower, which was removed in the 1980s.
