Blackhead Mountain
#4About Blackhead Mountain
Blackhead Mountain is the easternmost peak of the Blackhead Range and one of the four peaks required to be climbed in winter for membership in the Catskill 3500 Club. It is also the tallest mountain on the 24-mile Escarpment Trail. The ascent from the east side is one of the few places in the Catskills that typically requires crampons during winter conditions.
History
Blackhead Mountain was named for its dark appearance when viewed from the Hudson Valley. The mountain has been a hiking destination since the late 19th century and was one of the first peaks in the Catskills to have a maintained trail to its summit.
