About Bigelow Mountain
Bigelow Mountain features two main peaks, West Peak and Avery Peak, both exceeding 4,000 feet. West Peak is the highest at 4,134 feet. The mountain offers some of the most spectacular views in Maine, including Flagstaff Lake and the surrounding wilderness. The Appalachian Trail traverses the ridge.
History
Named for Major Timothy Bigelow who climbed it in 1775 during Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec, the mountain was nearly developed into a ski resort in the 1970s. A citizen's referendum in 1976 protected it as the Bigelow Preserve, one of the first such grassroots conservation efforts in the country.
