About Avery Peak
Avery Peak is the east summit of Bigelow Mountain at 4,082 feet. Named for Myron Avery, the peak offers outstanding views and is traversed by the Appalachian Trail. An old fire warden's cabin once stood on the summit.
History
The peak is named after Myron Avery, the first person to hike the entire Appalachian Trail and a key figure in its creation. Avery, a native of Lubec, Maine, served as chairman of the Appalachian Trail Conference from 1931 to 1952. The naming honors his tireless work in mapping and maintaining the trail.
