Upper Wolf Jaw
#29About Upper Wolf Jaw
Upper Wolf Jaw Mountain stands at 4,185 feet (1,276 m) and is the twenty-ninth highest peak in New York. Located in the Great Range between Lower Wolf Jaw and Armstrong, Upper Wolf Jaw is typically climbed as part of a traverse of the range. The peak's name comes from the distinctive shape of the notch between Upper and Lower Wolf Jaw, which resembles a wolf's open mouth when viewed from certain angles. The summit is partly wooded but offers good views from several lookouts, particularly towards the Great Range and Giant Mountain. The most common approach is from the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) via the Ausable Club, either ascending directly via Wedge Brook or as part of the Great Range traverse.
History
Upper Wolf Jaw received its colorful name from early settlers and explorers who noted that the notch between it and Lower Wolf Jaw resembled a wolf's open jaws. The mountain has been included in the Adirondack 46er list since its creation. Like many peaks in the eastern High Peaks region, access to Upper Wolf Jaw passes through the private Adirondack Mountain Reserve, a unique arrangement that allows public hiking access across private land. The peak was historically less visited than some of its more prominent neighbors in the Great Range but has gained popularity with the increasing number of hikers attempting to become 46ers. While not among the tallest High Peaks, Upper Wolf Jaw's position in the Great Range makes it a key summit for those traversing this famous ridge.
