Tabletop Mountain
#19About Tabletop Mountain
Tabletop Mountain rises to 4,427 feet (1,349 m) and is the nineteenth highest peak in New York. Located near Mount Marcy in the heart of the High Peaks Wilderness, Tabletop is named for its relatively flat, plateau-like summit. The mountain has no marked trail to the top; hikers follow an unmarked but well-established herd path that branches off from the Van Hoevenberg Trail to Marcy. The summit is mostly wooded, with limited views through the trees, though there are some small clearings offering glimpses of the surrounding peaks. Despite its proximity to the popular Mount Marcy trail, Tabletop receives significantly fewer visitors and offers a more wilderness-oriented experience.
History
Tabletop Mountain earned its name from its relatively flat summit plateau, which resembles a table when viewed from certain angles. The mountain has been included in the Adirondack 46er list since its creation, despite lacking an official maintained trail. Being close to Mount Marcy, the mountain was surveyed early in the exploration of the Adirondacks but remained less visited due to its wooded summit and limited views. The herd path to the summit developed over decades of use by hikers pursuing completion of the 46 High Peaks. The mountain's proximity to the heavily used Van Hoevenberg Trail means it's one of the more accessible 'trailless' peaks, making it a common choice for hikers looking to experience an unmarked peak with relatively less effort than other remote High Peaks.
