Street Mountain
#31About Street Mountain
Street Mountain stands at 4,166 feet (1,270 m) and is the thirty-first highest peak in New York. Located near Mount Nye in the northwestern section of the High Peaks region, Street is typically climbed in conjunction with its neighbor. The mountain has no official marked trail to its summit; hikers follow herd paths that have developed through consistent use. The summit is heavily wooded with limited views, though there are some lookout points on the trail. The most common approach is from the Adirondak Loj, following marked trails to a junction with unmaintained herd paths that lead to the summit. Despite its limited views, Street is a popular destination for aspiring 46ers.
History
Street Mountain was named after Alfred Billings Street, a 19th-century poet, writer, and lawyer who served as the New York State Librarian and wrote extensively about the Adirondacks, helping to popularize the region. His 1860 book 'The Indian Pass' was among the first to describe this area to a wider audience. The mountain was included in the original Adirondack 46er list, though later measurements showed it to be slightly under 4,000 feet. Like neighboring Nye Mountain, Street has never had an official maintained trail to its summit. The peak's relatively gentle terrain and proximity to the popular Adirondak Loj trailhead make it a common choice for hikers beginning their 46er journey, despite the unmaintained status of its summit path.
