South Dix
#37About South Dix
South Dix stands at 4,060 feet (1,237 m) and is the thirty-seventh highest peak in New York. Located in the Dix Range between Hough Peak and East Dix (Grace Peak), South Dix (also unofficially known as Carson Peak) is typically climbed as part of a traverse of the entire Dix Range rather than as a standalone destination. The mountain offers limited views from its wooded summit, with better vistas available from lookouts just off the peak. The most common approach is from the Elk Lake trailhead to the south, often combined with Macomb, Hough, and Dix mountains for a challenging but rewarding day hike.
History
South Dix is unofficially known as Carson Peak in honor of Russell M.L. Carson, who along with Bob and George Marshall, was among the first to climb all 46 High Peaks in the early 20th century. Carson authored 'Peaks and People of the Adirondacks,' a seminal work documenting the High Peaks and those who explored them. However, the peak remains officially named South Dix on maps due to its position south of the main Dix Mountain. The peak has been included in the Adirondack 46er list since its creation. Like many peaks in the Dix Range, South Dix is accessed via unmarked but well-established herd paths rather than officially maintained trails. The mountain is almost always climbed as part of a range traverse, connecting to neighboring East Dix (Grace Peak) and Hough Peak via a scenic ridgeline.
