Mount Skylight
#4About Mount Skylight
Mount Skylight is the fourth-highest peak in New York at 4,926 feet (1,501 m). It has a distinctive, largely bald, dome-shaped summit that provides exceptional 360-degree views. The peak gets its name from this open summit, which reflects sunlight like a skylight. Located close to Mount Marcy and accessible via several challenging trails, Skylight is often climbed as part of a loop that includes other High Peaks like Marcy and Gray.
History
Mount Skylight's name comes from its bare, rounded summit that shines in the sun. The first recorded ascent of Skylight was in the late 19th century. There is a tradition among hikers to carry a small rock from below and place it on the summit cairn for good luck. The mountain's summit contains a unique alpine ecosystem similar to that found in the Arctic tundra, with plant species that are rare in New York State.
