Santanoni Peak
#14About Santanoni Peak
Santanoni Peak reaches 4,607 feet (1,404 m) and is the fourteenth highest mountain in New York. Located in the remote western High Peaks region, Santanoni is the tallest peak in its namesake range, which also includes Panther Peak and Couchsachraga. The mountain is known for its isolation and wilderness character, as it's farther from trailheads than most other High Peaks. The summit is largely wooded, but clearings offer views of the surrounding mountains and wilderness. Hikers typically approach Santanoni from the Bradley Pond Trailhead near Tahawus, often climbing all three peaks of the Santanoni Range in a challenging day hike.
History
Santanoni Peak was named after a Native American word, though the exact meaning is debated—some suggest it means 'beyond the mountains.' The area around Santanoni was historically important for iron mining, and the nearby abandoned village of Tahawus was once a mining community. Unlike many High Peaks, Santanoni has never had an official marked trail to its summit. Hikers follow unmaintained 'herd paths' that have developed over decades of use. The peak was included in the original Adirondack 46er list, and its remote location and challenging access have preserved much of its wild character. The Santanoni Range is home to some of the most isolated terrain in the Adirondacks.
