Saddleback Mountain
#17About Saddleback Mountain
Saddleback Mountain reaches 4,515 feet (1,376 m) and is the seventeenth highest peak in New York. Located in the Great Range between Basin and Gothics, the mountain is named for the distinctive dip or 'saddle' between its two summit knobs. Saddleback is known for the infamous 'cliffs' on its eastern approach from Basin Mountain, a near-vertical rock face with fixed ladders and handholds that presents one of the most challenging trail sections in the High Peaks. The open summit provides exceptional views of the Great Range, particularly towards Gothics and the Ausable Valley.
History
Saddleback received its name from early surveyors who noted the distinctive saddle-like profile of its double summit. The mountain has been part of the Adirondack 46er list since its inception. The challenging cliffs on the eastern approach have been the site of numerous hiking accidents over the years, particularly in wet or icy conditions. These steep sections have had various aids installed over time to improve safety, including wooden ladders and steel rungs. The summit area contains rare alpine vegetation, and the Great Range Trail traversing Saddleback is considered one of the most scenic and challenging stretches of trail in the Northeast.
