Rocky Peak Ridge
#20About Rocky Peak Ridge
Rocky Peak Ridge, at 4,420 feet (1,347 m), is the twentieth highest peak in New York. Located just east of Giant Mountain in the Giant Mountain Wilderness, Rocky Peak Ridge is known for its distinctive open ridge with extensive stretches of bare rock and alpine meadows. The peak offers some of the most spectacular views in the Adirondacks, including panoramas of the High Peaks, Lake Champlain, and the Green Mountains of Vermont. While it can be approached from the east via the Zander Scott Trail, it is most commonly climbed in conjunction with Giant Mountain from Chapel Pond, creating one of the most scenic and challenging day hikes in the region.
History
Rocky Peak Ridge earned its descriptive name from the extensive open rocky areas along its ridgeline. The peak was included in the original Adirondack 46er list. The open areas on Rocky Peak Ridge are not true alpine zones but rather the result of fires and thin soil that prevented forest regeneration. These open areas have created unique habitats with rare plants and exceptional scenic beauty. Between Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant Mountain lies one of the steepest trail sections in the Adirondacks, dropping and climbing more than 700 feet in less than a mile. The eastern approach to Rocky Peak Ridge passes through a series of picturesque subalpine meadows with seasonal wildflowers, creating one of the most distinctive hiking experiences in the region.
