Porter Mountain
#38About Porter Mountain
Porter Mountain rises to 4,059 feet (1,237 m) and is the thirty-eighth highest peak in New York. Located just south of Cascade Mountain and often climbed in conjunction with it, Porter offers outstanding views despite being slightly lower than its more famous neighbor. The summit is partially open with excellent vistas of the Great Range, Giant Mountain, and many other High Peaks. Porter can be approached either via a short spur trail from Cascade Mountain or directly from Marcy Field via the Cascade Mountain Trail. The relatively easy access and moderate difficulty make Porter a popular destination for both beginning High Peaks hikers and those seeking to add an additional peak to their Cascade climb.
History
Porter Mountain was named after Noah Porter, a Yale University president who was among the early intellectual explorers of the Adirondacks in the late 19th century. The peak has been included in the Adirondack 46er list since its inception. The current trail was established in the early 20th century, with improvements made over the years by the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Department of Environmental Conservation. Porter's close proximity to Cascade has made it a popular 'two-for-one' hiking destination, allowing hikers to summit two High Peaks in a relatively short day hike. Despite being overshadowed in popularity by its neighbor Cascade, Porter actually offers arguably better views of the Great Range and surrounding mountains, making it a rewarding destination in its own right.
