Mount Haystack
#3About Mount Haystack
Mount Haystack, standing at 4,960 feet (1,512 m), is the third highest peak in New York. It has a distinctive, sharp profile that gave it its name, resembling a stack of hay. The summit offers spectacular views of the Great Range and neighboring Mount Marcy. The mountain is known for its challenging trail and the beautiful alpine vegetation found near its summit. Many hikers consider the view from Haystack to be among the finest in the Adirondacks.
History
The mountain's distinctive shape, resembling a haystack, is how it earned its name. It was first climbed in the late 19th century. The trail to Haystack passes through a col known as 'Panther Gorge,' a deep pass between Haystack and Mount Marcy that features old-growth forests and unique ecological zones. Like other High Peaks, the summit area contains protected alpine vegetation that is rare in New York State.
