Gray Peak
#7About Gray Peak
Gray Peak, at 4,840 feet (1,475 m), is the seventh highest mountain in New York State. Located near Mount Marcy and Mount Skylight in the central High Peaks region, Gray Peak is somewhat less visited than its neighbors despite its height. The mountain lacks a marked trail to its summit, making it a challenge for hikers seeking to become 46ers. The peak is often climbed as part of a traverse including Mount Marcy and Mount Skylight. From its densely forested summit, limited views can be obtained from lookout points.
History
Gray Peak was named for Asa Gray, a prominent 19th-century American botanist who studied Adirondack flora. Unlike many of the other High Peaks, Gray has no official, marked trail to its summit—hikers typically follow herd paths from either Lake Tear of the Clouds or the Four Corners junction. The mountain was included in the original Adirondack 46er list, and its remote location and trailless status have preserved much of its wilderness character. The summit remains wooded, though small viewing areas offer glimpses of the surrounding landscape.
