Grace Peak
#42About Grace Peak
Grace Peak, formerly known as East Dix, stands at 4,012 feet (1,223 m) and is the forty-second highest peak in New York. Located in the Dix Range between South Dix and Hough Peak, Grace Peak is typically climbed as part of a traverse of the entire range rather than as a standalone destination. The mountain was officially renamed in 2014 to honor Grace Hudowalski, the first woman to climb all 46 High Peaks and a founding member of the Adirondack 46ers. The summit offers limited views, but there are excellent vistas from several lookouts along the ridgeline approaching the peak. The most common approach is via the Elk Lake trailhead, often as part of a longer traverse including other peaks in the Dix Range.
History
Grace Peak was officially renamed in 2014 after Grace Hudowalski (1906-2004), who in 1937 became the first woman to climb all 46 High Peaks and later served as the longtime historian and founding member of the Adirondack 46ers. Previously known as East Dix, the peak's renaming represented a significant recognition of Hudowalski's contributions to Adirondack hiking culture and history. Grace was known for her extensive correspondence with aspiring 46ers, writing thousands of personal letters of encouragement and advice. The mountain was included in the original Adirondack 46er list. Like many peaks in the Dix Range, Grace Peak is accessed via unmaintained but well-established herd paths rather than officially marked trails. The summit, while mostly wooded, offers some views, particularly towards the Great Range and Giant Mountain.
