Giant Mountain
#12About Giant Mountain
Giant Mountain rises to 4,627 feet (1,410 m) and is the twelfth highest peak in New York State. Located in its own wilderness area, Giant is one of the most prominent peaks in the Adirondacks, with a distinctive ridge visible from many surrounding mountains and from the Adirondack Northway (I-87). The mountain offers some of the best views in the Adirondacks from its open summit, including panoramic vistas of the High Peaks, Lake Champlain, and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Giant is often recommended for beginning High Peaks hikers due to its relatively short but steep trails and exceptional summit views.
History
Giant Mountain was named by early settlers for its imposing size and prominence when viewed from the east. The mountain was first climbed and surveyed in the early 19th century. The Ridge Trail, one of the most popular routes to the summit, was cut in the 1920s and offers spectacular views along nearly its entire length, making it one of the most scenic trails in the Adirondacks. Giant is frequently paired with Rocky Peak Ridge (the 20th highest peak) as a day hike, creating a challenging but rewarding traverse. In 1936, parts of the mountain were designated as the Giant Mountain Wilderness Area, one of the first formally protected wilderness areas in the Adirondack Park.
