Dix Mountain
#6About Dix Mountain
Dix Mountain rises to 4,857 feet (1,480 m) and is the sixth highest peak in New York. The mountain is the centerpiece of the Dix Range, which includes four other High Peaks: Hough, South Dix (Carson), East Dix (Grace), and Macomb. Dix has a broad, sweeping ridge with an impressive south face featuring steep, open rock slides. From its summit, hikers enjoy panoramic views of the High Peaks, the Great Range, Giant Mountain, and the Green Mountains of Vermont to the east. The mountain is known for its steep, challenging trails and rugged beauty.
History
Dix Mountain was named after John A. Dix, who served as Secretary of the Treasury, Governor of New York, and was a United States Senator. The mountain was first surveyed in the early 19th century and became part of the original Adirondack 46er list. The Dix Mountain Wilderness Area was established to protect the mountain and its surrounding range. Historically, the mountain was affected by forest fires that cleared some areas of vegetation, resulting in the open rocky slides that are visible today on its slopes.
