Couchsachraga Peak
#46About Couchsachraga Peak
Couchsachraga Peak rises to 3,820 feet (1,164 m) and is the forty-sixth and lowest of the traditional High Peaks of New York. Located in the remote western High Peaks region as part of the Santanoni Range, Couchsachraga is notorious among aspiring 46ers for its challenging access. The name comes from Algonquin words meaning 'dismal wilderness,' a fitting description for this isolated peak. Despite being well below 4,000 feet, Couchsachraga remains on the traditional 46er list. The mountain has no marked trail to its summit; hikers follow unmaintained herd paths from the Bradley Pond Trail. The approach involves significant elevation loss and regain, as hikers must descend from the ridgeline to a col before climbing back up to the summit. The heavily wooded peak offers limited views, with a few small lookouts along the trail.
History
Couchsachraga's name derives from Algonquin words that roughly translate to 'dismal wilderness,' reflecting the remote and challenging nature of the area. The peak was included in the original Adirondack 46er list, though later measurements have shown it to be significantly under 4,000 feet at 3,820 feet—the lowest of the traditional 46 High Peaks. When the original 46er list was created in the early 20th century, Couchsachraga was believed to be over 4,000 feet based on the measurement technology available at the time. Despite its relatively low elevation, Couchsachraga is one of the more challenging peaks to reach due to its remoteness and the difficult terrain surrounding it. The peak is typically climbed as part of a traverse of the Santanoni Range, along with Santanoni and Panther peaks, creating a demanding day hike that tests the endurance of even experienced hikers. Couchsachraga's reputation as a difficult 'last peak' has made it a memorable finale for many completing their 46er journey.
